It's a little hard to look at directly as our eyes hate the detail, but the quality difference is not only obvious but it is impossible to mistake. The next comparison is our digitally enlarged version of the same negative and the shot. Once again you can see the incredible detail that is embedded within the film. You can see from the enlargements below that the ENLARGED digital image is far clearer than the film negatives, which is odd because they are still 20 times sharper than the digital image.Īt the top we have a film negative with the grass and trees clipped out. ![]() So if we have a film positive, a film negative and a digital image of the same detail then who is right, the film or the digital? Well the only way to find out is to print on the same material and you will get a better idea of the difference. This is because focal plane film transfer is much better than digital in this respect. However if the film positives were taken in black and white in a negative camera you would not be able to see the detail, however we have compared the original negatives with the film positives and the detail is far more apparent. Clearly a very obvious difference between the two, but what is the significance of this? Well normally you would make negatives from the film positives and then scan them into your computer in the same way as you have done for your digital cameras.
